Introduction • A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced with artificial material. • The knee is a hinge joint which provides motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. The thighbone abuts the large bone of the lower leg at the knee joint. • During a total knee replacement, the end of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal shell. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
The end of the lower leg bone is also removed and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem. • Depending on the condition of the kneecap portion of the knee joint, a plastic button may also be added under the kneecap surface. • The artificial components of a total knee replacement are referred to as the prosthesis. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
Benefits of Total knee Replacement Surgery • The replacement knee is designed only for usual day-to-day activity. You should be able to resume a more normal life. The pain in your knee, walking distance and mobility should have improved. You will not be able to participate in all sports or heavy activities. As well as improved walking you may be able to cycle and swim. • It is normal after a knee replacement to permanently have a numb patch around the scar over the front of the knee. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
The amount of bend in the knee varies principally depending on how much stiffness there was prior to operation. Most patients can bend their knee from straight to 110º. • Although possible, it is unlikely that you will be able to kneel on your knee replacement comfortably after the operation as this generally causes discomfort. • Most patients feel that the knee replacement does not move or feel like a normal knee. Additionally, they occasionally feel a clunk as the knee moves, particularly on stairs. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
Recovery at home • Rearrange furniture so you can maneuver with a cane, walker, or crutches. You may temporarily change rooms to avoid using the stairs. • Get a good chair—one that is firm with a higher-than-average seat and has a footstool for intermittent leg elevation. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
Install a shower chair, gripping bar, and raised toilet seat in the bathroom. • Use assistive devices such as a long-handled shoehorn, a long-handled sponge, and a grabbing tool or reacher to avoid bending over too far. www.kneeandjointsurgery.com
