Recording and Broadcasting of Enriched Media Courses Cédric Bontron, Benoît Burdet January 13, 2010
Initial Situation @ Unige • Existing centralized audio and video capture based on hardware capture cards (Optibase) • Existing uncentralized audio capture • Unautomated file upload and metadata completion • Audio and Video capture
Initial Aims • Makes a complete enriched media recording and broadcasting system available • This system allows a speaker to record and archive the whole media: Audio, video and VGA signals • Fully automatic capture • Automatic upload and metadata completion • Human validation & if needed metadata enrichment
Constraints • Teacher has nothing to do in the room • No human resources are needed to produce, edit and catalog the courses • Buildings (uncentralized signals in some cases)
Software • New scheduler in order to manage 3 differents capture systems (1 interface per building) • Automatic script for file uploading and metadata completion • Adaptation of Mediaserver public catalog to broadcast new formats • Interface for validating file content and metadata
Specificities • Automatic courses capture and cataloging • No human resources are needed for capture • Requires an installed files validation workflow • Requires a good communication between all actors (teacher, technician, content validator)
Specificities • Uncentralized solution • Disadvantages • A lot of distributed hardware to maintain • Human needs to control room hardware • Advantages • Economic (~1700 CHF/Room) • Doesn't require centralized signals (e.g. old buildings)
Statistics Audio vs Richmedia Recordings (2009-2010 Winter Semester)
Next Steps • Software • Video editor (soon) • Plugins for LMS (dokeos, moodle) content integration (soon) • Export modules (e.g. Youtube) • Hardware • Equipment for 130 rooms or auditoriums (Law Project)
