MAJOR EVENTS: • Symposium on educational opportunities for Canadian Institutions in China at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. • Presentation by TDSB and a speech in Chinese by Trustee Chris Bolton at The World Conference on Chinese Language & Culture Education in Chengdu. • Presentation by Qiaoban of a model school award to TDSB Georges Vanier SS International Languages School at the Conference. Georges Vanier SS has 255 students taking Simplified Mandarin and earning credit for their high school graduation. Its elementary division has 522 students in 24 simplified Mandarin classes JK-8. • Visit to an inner city elementary school outside Shanghai. • Renewal of and amendments to Memorandum of Agreement between Department of Culture and Education, China Overseas Exchange Association and TDSB

POPULATION COMPARISONS: The populations of Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai together are 13.2 million more than the whole country of Canada. The land mass of China and Canada are almost the same. Beijing and Shanghai each have more inhabitants than the Province of Ontario. By 2040 it is projected that India will have the largest population in the world. Chinese are limited to one child per family, India has no such restriction.
AVERAGE SALARY: 3800 Yuan per month = $600/ month. One of our guides and her husband spend 1,600 Yuan per month = $290 for food for two and eating out.
ECONOMIC FACTS: China is now the world’s No. 5 Consumer: China has become the 5th largest market for consumer spending, at $890 Billion, following the U.S., Japan, the U.K. and Germany. The ratio of China’s personal consumption to GDP is only 36%, half of the U.S. figure and two-thirds of the figures in Europe and Japan, indicating the market still has enormous growth potential.
ECONOMIC FACTS: By 2020, China will become the third-largest consumer market worldwide after the U.S. and Japan, when consumer spending is expected to exceed $2.5 trillion. China became the world’s largest exporter for the first time this year. In 2009 China will become the world’s largest car manufacturer, overtaking the U.S. and Germany.
AMAZING GROWTH: BEIJING No. of cars: 4 million No. of bikes: 5 million 60 years ago in Beijing there were 49 cars (government cars), and 5 buses. Immense: Toronto & New York Financial districts would fit in one corner of Beijing Financial District. Countless Banks. Roads enormous and modern but still all day traffic jams of cars & bikes. AMAZING GROWTH: CHENGDU Chengdu is located in Sichuan Province – the 5th largest province with 88 million inhabitants. Millions of bicycles, mopeds and scooters. The largest Buddha in the world. Panda Sanctuary.
AMAZING GROWTH: SHANGHAI Wall to wall high rise apartment and condo buildings. Amazing architecture Major traffic jams. (A 3 km. trip took 1 hour 20 min.) Most cosmopolitan city. All luxury, high end, stores available like Chanel, Mont Blanc, Cartier, Gucci, Ferragamo etc. Parkson’s Department store just like Holt Renfrew in size and goods available. Subway expansion of 4 more lines planned. To be completed in 2010 in time for the 2010 World Expo.
