  2. We the people of the United States • We are one country, not 13 separate countries • We are united with common goals

  3. In order to form a more perfect union • We are trying to create a better government • Nothing is perfect!

  4. Establish Justice • Create a court system in order to settle disputes

  5. Ensure domestic tranquility • Domestic – home or homeland • Tranquility – peace • Keep the peace at home

  6. Provide for the common defense • Create an army to defend us against outside attacks

  7. Promote the general welfare • Look out for citizens, not create laws to harm them

  8. Secure the blessings of liberty, for ourselves and our posterity • We were so lucky to have defeated the British and have our freedom • We want to keep this for ourselves and future generations

  9. Do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America • This is now officially the laws of the United States
