  1. Baptism: How and Why ? What are the symbols and what do they signify?

  2. The Sacraments • Baptism is sometimes called the “hinge “ sacrament…it is the first to be received and thus the others hinge upon it. • Also called the door to the Church as it is the door by which we enter the faith

  3. The Sacraments • Baptism is one of the Sacraments of Initiation, along with Eucharist and Confirmation • Sacraments of healing • Reconciliation • Anointing of the sick Sacraments of Vocation/service Marriage Holy Rrders

  4. A sign on something shows its origins or ownership. Parents and god-parents trace it on the child's forehead to show that the baby belongs to Christ, who now offers his help and grace Symbols: The Sign of the Cross

  5. Sign of the Cross • What other signs or symbols do we use to show ownership? • What other possessions do we mark as our own?

  6. The White garment • For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.Gal 3:27*White Garment • This garment is a relic of the new clothes worn by Christians after baptism in the first centuries. It is a sign of innocence and the new life of resurrection. • You may provide your own or use the one provided by the parish

  7. The White garment • On what other occasions do we wear white? • What does it symbolize on those occasions? • When else do we use white garments in our liturgical rituals?

  8. The Baptismal candle • These symbolize Christ the Light of the World. The baptismal candle is lit from the paschal candle, which stands near the altar at Easter as a sign of the risen Christ. The baptismal candle reminds us that the light of Christ has entered the child’s life; and its flame symbolizes the flame of faith

  9. The Baptismal candle • In what other rituals is light important? • How will you encourage a child to be a light to others?

  10. Oils of Baptism • Oil of Baptism (Oil of catechumens) is olive oil rubbed on the breast of the baby, just as athletes used to rub themselves with oil to strengthen and prepare for the fight ahead. • Oil of Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam (sweet-smelling ointment) and is rubbed on the crown of the head. It is a sign of sealing with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The oils are blessed by the bishop. • Also used in Confirmation and ordination

  11. Oil • What are some of the uses for oil?

  12. Water • This is for cleansing and is a sign that our sins are washed away. Baptism cleanses us of original sin with which we are all born and, in the baptism of adults, of every sin committed prior to baptism. Water is also necessary for life and so is a sign, too, that the life of the risen Christ is ours.

  13. Water • What is the importance of water in our lives?

  14. Biblical foundations of Baptism and its symbols • Matthew 5; 14-16 - light • You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

  15. Biblical foundations of the Sacrament and its symbols • Oil: Samuel 16:1, 6-7, 10-13 • The LORD said to Samuel: "How long will you grieve for Saul, whom I have rejected as king of Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen my king from among his sons." • In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen any one of these." • Then Samuel asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" Jesse replied, "There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep." Samuel said to Jesse, "Send for him; we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here." • Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them. He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance. The LORD said, "There-anoint him, for this is he!" Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand, anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.

  16. Biblical foundations • Water: Exodus 14;15-17, 26,28 • Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. • And you, lift up your staff and, with hand outstretched over the sea, split the sea in two, that the Israelites may pass through it on dry land. • But I will make the Egyptians so obstinate that they will go in after them. Then I will receive glory through Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots and charioteers. Then the LORD told Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may flow back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and their charioteers • As the water flowed back, it covered the chariots and the charioteers of Pharaoh's whole army which had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not a single one of them escaped.

  17. Reasons for Baptism in the New Testament • A. Spiritual Rebirth (John 3:3-10) • B. Spiritual Awakening (Romans 8:37-39) • C. Initiation into the Body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-13) • D. Transformation of the whole person (Romans 12:1-2) • E. Made a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17) • F. To turn from darkness to light (Ephesians 5:8, Colossians 1:11-14) • G. To be saved (Titus 3:3-7)
