Know more about Subchondral Fracture A subchondral fracture is a fracture of trabecular cancellous bone just beneath the subchondral bone plate without disrupting articular surfaces. Subchondral insufficiency fractures are more common in elderly women, but it can occur at any age group. There are some risk factors for subchondral Fractures they involve if a patient is having conditions like osteoporosis, osteoarthritis or meniscal tears. These conditions are very prone to subchondral fracture. Usually subchondral Fracture has few common symptoms like pain in weight- bearing or affected joints. Subchondral Fracture is usually the consequences of compressive forces transmitted from cartilage to bone plate. This force causes breaks in a bone resulting in a subchondral fracture condition. They can also occur in conjunction with twisting and ligaments injury. Subchondral Fracture may be caused by traumatic injury or overuse or repetitive injury. Mostly common with joints like knee, hip and ankle joints. These Fracture are diagnosed by few examinations like X-ray , CT scan and MRI etc. Usually a linear or curvilinear structure is seen just above the bone plate. MRI results in few stages like first bone marrow edema is seen then low signal intensity line of Fracture is seen in MRI followed by cyst, then cortical collapse. Conditions like this are seen through MRI results in subchondral fracture conditions. After diagnosing subchondral Fracture, you have to soon go for treating it. Avoiding it for too long can result in severe complications like osteochondral injury or even affect your mobility and increase your dependency.
Low grade subchondral Fracture is treated by conservative method with restricted weight bearing.
