What is Naturopathy? Naturopath or naturopathic medical care is a modern type of alternative medical practice that uses a wide variety of pseudoscience, labeled as "alternative", "natural", or "non-invasive". The philosophy and practices of naturopathic health are all based on ancient folk medicine and naturopath philosophy, not empirical, scientific medicine. The term "naturopath's" origin can be traced back to 1812 in the United States when James Morton introduced the first textbook on naturopathy. While the concept is not original to Morton, it is an evolution from the "medicinal" treatment by a doctor that was common prior to the 1800's. In addition, Morton also introduced the term "hygienist" which became synonymous with natural healer as naturopath continued to evolve in practice and theory. In contrast to Naturopathic Medical Clinic science, naturopath's do not use the scientific method of inquiry, instead relying upon intuition and beliefs about nature and disease that are not backed by evidence and research. Most naturopaths don't use any form of controlled scientific testing. The
practitioners and scientists rely only on testimonials, anecdotes, or personal experience. Naturopaths are also extremely vulnerable to the placebo effect, believing in the power of touch, suggestion, and the emotional response to what is called "treating the symptom rather than the cause". There is a lack of standards in naturopath's practice and they are not subject to the requirements of the FDA. They are also not regulated by government agencies. They must rely on what they have learned from their patients. While there are some states that have passed laws to regulate naturopath's practices, the regulation does not apply to all states. As of today, naturopaths are still practicing without regulation and not requiring licensing, certification, or any type of certification from their State or County Health Departments. It is unfortunate that so many people have turned to naturopaths for information, and treatment for conditions and diseases. Naturopaths are not able to offer the best medical advice. due to lack of clinical knowledge and training. I remember going into my naturopath's office after having had surgery at the age of thirty-five. My naturopath was not qualified to perform the surgery and he did not have any clue what was going on. After he examined me, I was told that my body was healing itself. The naturopath's office gave me antibiotics to take for two weeks and that I should avoid eating chocolate and eating certain types of nuts. I was given a new diet to follow. After four days of taking these medications and eating properly, I was able to return to my normal eating habits and went to my naturopath's office for a follow up visit. I was told that there was no need to eat chocolate or eat nuts. and to stick with the foods that I had been eating before. I was still very sick and was told that the symptoms were not life threatening.
