Title I is a Federal grant that provides funds to schools who qualify based on the socio-economic status of its students. • The goal of Title I is a high-quality education for every child. • Title I monies should supplement district funds. • A portion of Title I funds must be spent on family involvement. Title I
Regular Title 1 Funds - $158,400.00 • Stimulus Title 1 Funds - $61,360 Title I
Parent’s Role • Work with school personnel to ensure your child’s success • Be involved in the decisions that affect your child’s education • Become part of the Local School Council and other decision making groups at the school • Volunteer your time, attention and talents • Attend parent workshops, training and parent/teacher conferences • Monitor homework and limit TV watching • Ask questions when you have concerns
School’s Role • Develop a written parental involvement policy/plan and compact with parent input • Offer workshops and trainings on how parents can help their child • Provide materials to help parents work with their child. • Conduct parent\teacher conferences
Each Title I school must jointly develop with, agree upon, and distribute to parents a written family involvement plan. • Some of the components to be specified are: • Convene an annual meeting to explain Title I and inform parents of their rights; • Offer a flexible number of meetings; • Involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way; • Provide timely information about Title I programs to parents, explain the curriculum, the student assessments and the minimum standards that students are required to meet. Compact • Your school must have a school-parent compact that is written by parents and school personnel. • The compact sets out the responsibilities of the student, parent and school staff in striving to raise student achievement. • The compact is to be reviewed and signed each year.

Parents have the right to request and receive timely information on the professional qualifications of their child’s teachers. • Parents must be notified if their child is assigned, or taught by, a teacher who is not highly qualified for four or more consecutive weeks. • Parents will be provided information on the level of achievement of their child in each of the state academic assessments required by law. • These communications will be in a language the parent can understand. According to research, the most accurate predictor of student success is not income, social or educational status. It is the extent the family is able to create a home environment that encourages learning, communicates high, but reasonable expectations to their children and becomes involved in their children’s education at home and at school. The Language Arts Department encompasses all components of the communication process which consists of: • Reading • Writing • Speaking • Listening Language Arts
The fundamental goal of Language Arts is to develop effective communication skills that will serve as tools for acquiring and applying other skills and knowledge. To communicate is to participate in an active, purposeful process that results in shared meaning. The language arts classroom provides a supportive environment for the students as they are encouraged to experiment and take risks with using language.
