What is the imperative? • Command form of verb • Used to give an order to someone • Example: “Bring me food.” • Imperative is not a verb tense (we are learning the present imperative) • It’s a verb mood • Other verb moods we know are • Indicative (normal verbs) • Infinitive (not limited by a subject, not conjugated)
More about imperatives • Imperative verbs are 2nd person • “Bring me food” = I want you to bring me food • They can be singular or plural • “Marcus, bring me food.” • “Quintus and Titus, bring me food.”
Forming the Imperative • Based on the present stem (2nd PP, take off –re) • Use NO ending for singular • Use –te ending for plural • maneo,manēre Singular command: manē “Marcus, stay.” Plural command: manēte “You guys, stay.”
Problems w/ 3rd conjugation • pono, ponere • Singular: pone • Plural: ponite NOT ponete • 4 irregular imperatives • dico dic facio fac • ducoduc ferofer • Plural forms are regular (-ite)
