Overall project outline • Activities concentrated on: • Occurrence of DDT (PhD Fantahun Wassie) • Wastewater treatment & remediation of liquid pollution • Solid waste collection and processing • Multi-step approach (for liquid and solid waste): surveys – inventarisation – suggestions to management – technological solutions • Visits from North: Bart Van der Bruggen, Ilse Smets, Walter Steurbaut • Training session: Alemayehu Haddis (Jan. 2008)

  4. Wastewater treatment • Data collection: discharge points to Awetu and Kito Rivers • Sampling and analysis of river water and wastewater • Technological solutions: case of campus JU (dormitories) • Small scale, on site treatment methods • Sand filtration + adsorption vs. Constructed wetlands: comparison of methods • Application on other test sites, e.g. coffee dehulling plant

  5. Solid water treatment • Data collection: generation of solid waste in Jimma + JU • Analysis of distribution of solid waste fractions • Suggestions for management in current situation • Further plans: investigation of possibilities for discharge, design of proposed facility (e.g., layout of landfill)
