  2. What is Achalasia? • Achalasia is a rare disorder associated with the esophagus. In this condition, the esophagus is not able to move food and liquids down the stomach. The esophagus is a muscular tube that is responsible for transporting food from the mouth to the stomach. There is a ring of muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is present in the area where the esophagus meets the stomach. • This muscle is required to relax to allow food to enter the stomach. When people have achalasia, their LES does not ease up. People suffering from achalasia may face problems in eating solid foods and drinking liquid.
