What and Why • Contamination Control • Decontamination • 3 Levels of Decontamination
Sterilizations • Destroys All Living Organisms on a Surface. • Only Necessary in a Surgical Environment. • Multi- Step Process, • Difficult to Obtain in the Salon.
Sanitation • Lowest Level of Decontamination. • Removing All Visible Contaminates • Wash Hands – Happy B-day or ABCs Song
Disinfections • Controls Microorganisms on Nonliving Surfaces. • Disinfection Is Almost As Good As Sterilizations • They Can Also Damage Skin and Living Tissue, • Wear Gloves Protect Yourself!
Types of Disinfectants • Quats (quaternary ammonium compounds) • most common • safe and fast acting, • cost effective • Phenolic • corrosive to skin and implements • very expensive. • Use in blood spill procedures.
Other Disinfectants • Bleach or Alcohol • Ultra Violet Ray • Bead Sanitizers • Formalin • MSDS
