  1. PARTICIPATION IN THE INTERNATIONAL SANITATION CONVENTION BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SANITATION SITUATION IN MOZAMBIQUE NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2018

SANITATION IN MOZAMBIQUE • More than half of the people who live in Mozambique, defecate in the open - (10m in rural areas and 1m in urban areas) and 75% rural Mozambican households do not have toilets; • Sanitation coverage rate in rural areas is 22,4% and Urban is 48%; • Annual increase of sanitation rate in rural areas is around 2% and 0,3% in urban areas;

SANITATION IN MOZAMBIQUE • Poor sanitation costs more than 4 billions of Metical’s – high mortality rate, medical treatment costs and low productivity; • Mozambican families (annual expenditure) around 660 millions of meticais in health care provision (treatment, transport, medical personal costs etc.).

  4. GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT BY 2030 • To improve health condition of Mozambican population in 2025 by Eliminating Open Defecation in all communities; • Allocation of financial resources (specific budget) for sanitation and hygiene, on Integrate Sanitation Plan on Five-Year Government Plan; • On going Integrate Programs of Sanitation, Hygiene, Nutrition and Gender to ensure universal access and use of Water and Sanitation infrastructure to all citizens in Mozambique – schools, health posts and public places;

  5. GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT BY 2030 • On going the design of the National Rural Sanitation Strategy to increase the coordination among different institutions -government, donors and private sector involved in sanitation and hygiene promotion; • Advocacy at all level to promote a participation of communities and local leaders in promotion sanitation and hygiene’s good practices; • On going design of Trainers of Trainers in Sanitation, Nutrition, Gender and Social Inclusion to promote the integration and behavior change at all levels at communities.
