“I live in a beautiful town, I was born and grow in it, I am proud of my Mother town, Velikiy Novgorod is the name of it!”
Novgorod is one of the ancient towns of our country. It was founded in 859 and had been the capital of the large feudal republic.Novgorod served as an outpost in the North-West of Russia.
NOVGOROD TODAY Now it has more than 50 churches and some convents (monasteries).
Ruins of the monument During the Great Patriotic War all monuments were destroyed, but just after the Red Army had liberated the town, they began to restore all historical relicts.
The Kremlin The centre of the town is the Kremlin. It is situated on the river Volkhov.
Sights of the Kremlin In the Kremlin there is a monument “Millennium of Russia”, St. Sophia Cathedral, Facets Chamber (ГрановитаяПалата).
The Trade Side The Kremlin is connected with the other side of the town, which is called the Trade Side. Here, on the Yaroslave Court (yard), there was a market place in ancient times.
Novgorod Monasteries • Novgorod is surrounded by some convents: the St. Yury Monastery, the Khutin Monastery, the St. Antony Monastery.
“Vitoslavlitsi”. • Near the St. Yury Monastery you can find an outdoor museum of wooden architecture. It is called “Vitoslavlitsi”. There are some old peasant houses collected in Novgorodian villages. There tourists can visit exhibitions dedicated to old Russian crafts (ремесла).
Novgorod is a Russian treasure-house that we must keep for future generations.
