Briefing for PSMA March 2016 Paul Lee - EPSMA Vice Chairman and Secretariat www.epsma.org secretariat@epsma.org
Membership • 26 members, of whom: • 18 full • 3 supplier members • 5 affiliate members (universities and institutions)
Member Companies – Power Component Suppliers Member Companies – Affiliates UP Madrid ETH Zurich University of Nottingham University of Padova Delft University of Technology
Organisational status • Secretariat was IHS global until September 2015 • Now secretariat function handled within EPSMA • EPSMA ‘re-vitalised’ with • New updated website • New secretariat mandate
Activities • Generation of Technical Papers through Technical Committee • Influencing international standards (Liaison partner with CENELEC) • Recruitment listings through website • Promotion of member companies through website • Industry news through website • Circulation of market data to member companies • Quarterly newsletter
Technical Committee • 13 members from 6 European countries • Meets 4 times per year around Europe • Experts or access to experts in the fields of safety, EMC, product qualification, market areas (Rail, Medical, Telecommsetc) • Output is technical papers sharing best practice and design guides amongst member companies also available to the public to buy.
Latest Technical Paper • “Accurate Efficiency Measurements” • Scope • The objective of this white paper is to specify a standard, how to determine efficiency of AC-DC and DC-DC power supply units (PSU) accurately and comparably. Thermal steady state is assumed unless stated otherwise. • Deviating measurements result either from random or systematic error. Random errors mainly in the device under test (DUT) are caused by unknown and unpredictable parameters like parts tolerances, which can mostly be described by a Gaussian normal distribution. By referring to a reference DUT, random errors can be neglected in this guide. • The focus is on minimizing systematic errors like: • measurement setup (source, sink, wiring, mounting) • environmental conditions of the DUT (temperature, altitude) • instrument inaccuracy (range, temperature drift)
