HUMPBACK WHALES By Zach Kallmeyer
What do they look like? Humpback whales can reach 62 feet long. That’s pretty big! They have a tapered head and enormously long, thin flippers. These whales are white underneath and dark gray or black on their back and sides.
Communication They travel in groups called pods, and use a complex variety of moans and screams to communicate.
The Acrobats of the Ocean Humpback whales are very acrobatic, sometimes jumping clear out of the water! They do this for play, to loosen skin parasites, and the jumps sometimes even have a social meaning!
Where do they live? These whales live at the surface of all the oceans, but they prefer shallow waters.
Migration They migrate from polar waters to the tropical waters where they breed.
Reproduction The breeding occurs mostly in winter to early spring near the surface of warm, tropical waters. It takes 11 to 12 months, and the baby (called a calf) is born tail first.
How big is the calf? The calf is usually 14 feet long and weighs about 2.5 tons.
What do they eat? Humpback whales eat schools of small fish, krill, and plankton. To eat, a humpback whale uses 270 to 400 thin, fringed plates called baleen. They filter their food through the baleen by taking big gulps of prey and squeezing water out of the baleen. You may have seen this in the movie Finding Nemo.
Breathing These whales breath air at the surface through 2 blowholes near the top of the head. They breath 1-2 times per minute at rest, 4-8 times a minute after a deep dive. Their blow is a double stream of spray that rises 10-13 feet above the water!
How long do Humpback Whales live? Humpback whales usually live to age 45-50.
How fast can they swim? They normally swim 3-9 miles per hour, but can go up to 15-16.5 mph.
