History of Goodwill • Started in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms in Boston, Massachusetts • Collected used clothing and goods in affluent areas • Trained and hired those in need to mend and fix the used goods that were then re-sold • “A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out”
History of Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ • Goodwill Industries of Greater NY was founded in Brooklyn, NY in 1915 • Each Goodwill is territorial • Our territory consists of New York City, Long Island, Northern New Jersey, and upstate New York • Headquartered in Astoria, Queens, NY
Mission Statement • Goodwill Industries, through the power of work, will enhance the quality and dignity of life for individuals, families and communities. We will strive to overcome barriers to opportunity for people in need and facilitate empowerment, self-help and service.
Vision Statement • We at Goodwill Industries will be satisfied only when every person in the communities we serve has the opportunity to achieve full potential as an individual and to participate and contribute in all aspects of a productive life.
Goodwill Industries International • 166 Goodwill organizations in North America and 14 Goodwill organizations internationally • In 2008: • 1,525,451 people were served through employment & training programs • 172,317 people were placed in employment • $3.28 billion in total revenue was generated • 2,324 retail store locations
Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ • In 2008: • 136,800 people were served through our 85+ employment and training programs • 12,500 people were placed in competitive employment • 7,000 youth in recreational and educational programs • We currently operate 37 retail stores throughout our territory of New York and Northern New Jersey
