The WHREN/LILA Project • WHREN: Western Hemisphere Research and Education Network • LILA Links Interconnecting Latin America • IRNC Project funded by NSF and leaded by FIU and CENIC in the US. • CLARA, CUDI, RNP, ANSP from Latin America • Acquired IRU of Dark fiber Tijuana-San Diego. Running GbE on top of it. (to Pacific Wave) • 2.4 Gbps Sao Paulo-Miami shared with CHEPREO & ANSP (to Atlantic Wave)
Intercontinental Connections GEANT/CLARA funded Link LILA funded Links
Complete Topology2008 VPN over LILA Link
The Scenario during 2008 • The RedCLARA Network currently connects 12 countries • The ALICE Project initially due to end on March 2006 was extended and ended on March 31, 2008 • A new funding, ALICE2 is expected to be approved during 2008 • CLARA has taken over the contracts for regional networks • The link to Europe is co-funded by GEANT and CLARA
RedCLARA’s Vision for 2009 • Future backbone should be composed at least of CLARA owned dark fiber in the following links • AR-CL; AR-BR; BR-UY • The Intercontinental link to Europe should reach 2.5 Gbps during 2010 growing to 1.2 Gbps in 2008 • The PA-MX and PA-CL should be at least STM-4 as well as the BR-MX • The Node in Miami should be connected to PA at 1.2 Gbps • Central America should be connected at STM-1 speeds while the Puebla-Panamá Plan begins operation
New Connections 2008-2009 • CLARA is committed to connect all Latin American Countries • ALICE2 will include all LA countries willing to participate • Expressions of interest have already been received from Bolivia, Costa Rica and Paraguay • Main issues are: • Funding of the Local NREN • Costs of Telecomunications
Project Promotion Activities • EELA, EELA-2: Computational Grid Activities • RinGrid: Remote Instrumentation • AugerAccess: Connecting the Cosmic Ray Observatory in Malargüe • EVALSO: Connectin the Astronomical Observatories in Chile • GLOBAL: Global Virtual Conference Center facility
IADB RPG NREN Support Project • Funded by RPG Programm of IADB • Aiming at strengthening the NREN and CLARA • Strategic Plans • Marketing Plans • Telecom and AUP Issues • Training on Management for the NRENs • Best Practices • Case Studies
e-Science Promotion Activities • FEMCIDI/OAS Project on “Fostering the Use of ICT in Science, Technology and Innovation (e-Science)” • Delphi Survey on e-Science needs and policies in LA • Regional Dialogs on e-Science • LA Workshop on e-Science Policies • Research Communities will be fostered • An Information and Collaboration System will be deployed.
