Inuit Perspective on Nationalism By: Kellan Reil
Who are the Inuit • One of the first peoples of Canada, with their own language and culture • Inhabit the Arctic region • They have been isolated from mainstream Canada because of many reasons
Treaties • The Inuit signed no treaties with the British and Canadian governments • The British and Canadian governments felt that they didn’t need to make treaties
Result • Inuit feel excluded from Canada and its political process • Feel they don’t have to follow the Canadian process • The Inuit were not subject of the Indian Act
Relocation • In the 1930’s animal populations essential to Inuit survival declined causing many Inuit to face starvation • In 1939 the government decided that Inuit were their responsibility and decided to relocate the Inuit into permanent communities, usually by force
Relocation • The government moved the Inuit from northern Quebec to areas of Nunavut • They promised the Inuit people that it was a livable area with lots of animals to hunt • It was soon found out though by the Inuit that it was a harsh environment with little animals to hunt
Result • Policy ignored importance of Inuit nomadic way of life • Relocation created many social problems the remain unsolved (ex. Unemployment) • Many Inuit believe self-government is the only way to solve problems • http://www.precisenews.us/vrplayer.html?assetId=4306996&feedId=f11&group=news&mrss=vx&title=Inuit%20get%20federal%20apology%20forced%20relocation
Non-status Indians • The Inuit are considered to be non-status Indians, meaning that they are not registered under the Indian Act
Result • The Inuit do not receive the same benefits as other status Indians • These benefits including money for post secondary education and health care benefits • This has made it harder the Inuit to get by in mainstream Canada
Global Warming • Global warming, caused by mainstream Canada’s emissions are destroying Inuit traditional land • Also causing animals essential to Inuit culture to disappear • http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=3181766n
Results • Traditional Inuit way of life is being threatened • Inuit blame mainstream Canada for global warming, causing a strain in their relationship
Conclusion • The Inuit feel isolated from mainstream Canada because of the neglectful actions of mainstream Canada • These actions including not signing treaties, relocating them without fulfilling promises, making them non-status Indians and polluting their land
