  1. 1963- established funding for the study and cleanup of air pollution, but there was no comprehensive federal response to address the issue • 1965 – the Motor Vehical Air Pollution Control Act added to the legislation • 197- rewrote the original Clean Air Act; set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and New Source Performance Standards (NSPS); Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) given task of regulating it • 1977 – debated over emission vehicle standards; made first attempt to prevent the destruction of the stratospheric ozone, modifying the Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD); set more realistic goals • 1990 – amended the Clean Air Act again; raised automobile emission standards; mandated installment of Best Available Control Technology (BACT) Clean Air Act

Clean Air Act Continued • Has had limited success in regulating pollution • Has since reduced emission of common air polluants by 72% while increasing GDP by 219% • Stated with lofty goals in the 1960s and1970s and has been since attempting to provide better regulation and set more realistic goals • Strictly an piece of legislation governing emissions within the US • Currently addresses ozone depletion,climate change, and conventional air pollution • Uses marketincentives to reduce pollution emission levels while also setting up regulations to holdcompaniesleagallyresponsible • EPA funds the research and analysisintocurrent pollution levels, emission levels, and the effects of air pollution • Littletechnologicaldevelopementdone by the EPA
