  3. Skill 1: Listening Our Steps Step 1: Look At The Person Who Is TalkingStep 2: Sit QuietlyStep 3: Think About What Is Being SaidStep 4: Say Yes Or Nod Your HeadStep 5: Ask A Question About The Topic To Find Out More

  4. Skill 1: Listening Step 1: Look At The Person Who Is Talking You need to look at the person who is talking to you so they think you are listening.

  5. Skill 1: Listening Step 2: Sit (Or Stand) Quietly This step is to show the person who is talking that you are really listening.

  6. Skill 1: Listening Step 3: Think About What Is Being Said You can do this by facing the person who is talking and trying not to laugh, fidget, or play with something.

  7. Yes Skill 1: Listening Step 4: Say Yes Or Nod Your Head Both verbal and nonverbal messages are great to show that you are listening. Giving a thumbs up, raising your hand, nodding your head, and saying yes are all examples of messages you can use to show that you are listening. Can you think of any?

  8. Skill 1: Listening Step 5: Ask A Question About The Topic To Find Out More It is important to remember to ask questions about what the person is talking about. Ask questions that do not change the topic.

  10. Here are some suggested activities. Practice these with your students/friends so you can become expert listeners. School: Your teacher explains an assignment. Home: Your parents are talking to you about a chore. Peer Group: Another student tells about a story he/she read or what he/she did over the weekend. Skill 1: Listening Lets Practice!
