  2. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Many students enjoy setting academic goals such as learning addition facts or reading a given number of books. Setting smaller goals however can be easily achieved in a relatively short period of time, such as reading one book or learning the plus one addition facts. Goal setting is also useful for nonacademic skills such as prosocial skills. Prosocial skills can include skills used at home or with friends.

  3. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Our Steps: Step 1: Decide on a goal you want to reach. Step 2: Decide on the steps you will need to get there. Step 3: Take the first step. Step 4: Take all other steps one at a time. Step 5: Reward yourself when your goal is reached.

  4. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Step 1: Decide on a goal you want to reach. It is real important for you to choose a goal that is realistic. You have to consider what all is involved with the goal and the time frame you want to achieve your goal. Make sure it is something you are going to be able to reach. What are some short term goals you want to achieve? How about long term goals?

  5. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Step 2: Decide on the steps you will need to get there. It is important to list out the steps you will need to take in order to achieve your goal. You can list out the steps on a bulletin board, type them out on a piece of paper to keep in a student folder, or even write them on a card and tape to your desk. This way you will be able to keep track of what step you are on.

  6. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Step 3: Take the first step. Once you have listed all the steps you will need to take, start working on your first step. Think about what you need to do in order to get started. Don’t forget, your teacher is a great resource to help you get started!

  7. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Step 4: Take all other steps one at a time. After you finish the first step move onto the next. It is a great idea to check off each step as you complete them. This will help you stay organized and know where you are at in the goal reaching process.

  8. Skill 13: Setting a Goal Step 5: Reward yourself when your goal is reached. Self-reinforcement may be necessary. You may also be rewarded by teachers, parents, and/or peers. What are some ways you can reward yourself when you goal has been reached?
