Why did the US join in the Imperialist Club? • Thirst for new markets • Need new trade partners to sell overflow of goods • Needed raw materials for factories • Desire for Military Strength • Admiral Alfred T. Mahan: “The Influence of Sea Power on the World” • Commodore Matthew Perry brings US ships into Japan • The Great White Fleet (8 ships) • Cultural Superiority • Social Darwinism • Rudyard Kipling, The White Man’s Burden • American Missionaries, China

S. and Hawaii • Why was Hawaii annexed? • to incorporate territory into an existing country or state. • Two reasons: • Business Interests: shipping routes, sugar plantations • Military Interests: Pearl Harbor, 1887, fueling station • 1887- Hawaiians forced to sign a constitution which gave whites most of the power • Queen Liliuokalani, “Hawaii for Hawaiians” • Wanted to remove property-owning qualifications for voting • 1893 – American businessmen backed an uprising Sanford Ballard Doleproclaims the Republic of Hawaii in 1894, against the orders of Grover Cleveland

  6. 1959: Becomes 50th U.S. State • 1993: President Clinton Signs Apology Resolution • Apologized for the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani

  7. Acquiring “Seward’s Icebox” • 1867: Secretary of State William Seward bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million - People thought this was a bad deal and called it “Seward’s Folly”

  8. Alaska Today… • Alaska became the 49th state in 1959 • Today, Alaska provides the U.S. with goods ranging from oil to salmon.
