Literary Glossary • Open your binders to your Literature Section. • The first page is going to be the start of your “Literary Glossary,” where you will keep important notes on literary terms. This glossary will always stay in the front of your literature section, even when you add items in.
Plot Definition: The sequence of events in a story, novel, or play
Elements of Plot • Exposition: When a story’s characters, setting, and situation are introduced • Narrative hook: a part in the exposition that catches the reader’s attention • This is when the story’s “problem” will be introduced.
Elements of Plot • Rising action: complications to the story’s problem or situation that build suspense and reader interest • Foreshadowing, or hints, take place in the rising action
Elements of Plot • Climax: The point of greatest emotional intensity, interest, or suspense in a story. • Usually the “turning point” in a story • The point when the resolution, or ending, becomes clear
Elements of Plot • Falling action: The action that follows the climax • Resolution/denouement: The final outcome of the story and/or conflict
