IS299ASIS Capstone Unit 8 Giving and Receiving Feedback
Agenda • Reminders • Unit 8 Assignments • Project Details (Peer Review) • Seminar Questions • Tips for Peer Review • Conclusion
Reminders • Final Project (and any late work) due at the end of Unit 9 • Check the gradebook for missing assignments • Incompletes
Unit 8 Assignments Readings • Peer Review (Peer Groups/Offering Constructive Advice) Discussion Question (1) • Participating in the Peer Review Project • Peer Review Worksheet
Project Details • Partner List in Announcements & emailed to you already • Peer Review Worksheet linked to U8 project instructions • Exchange papers ASAP (by Friday, if possible) • Submit worksheets to Dropbox AND to your partner
From the Peer Review Worksheet (in Doc Sharing) • What is your favorite aspect of this paper and why? What is your least favorite and why? • Looking carefully, find at least two confusing sections. This may be at the word, sentence, or paragraph level, perhaps an incorrect word or odd punctuation. The sentences might be awkward or too long. Even if the confusion clears up later, tell where the sections are, and explain why they are confusing. • Using the post-draft outlining revision strategy discussed in Unit 7, outline this paper (you do not have to do the paragraph-level outline, just the whole-paper version). Using this outline, what information is still missing from the paper? Which points are repeated, and is the repetition unnecessary? Does the author promise to talk about anything that is not discussed? Should any of the paper's main ideas be reorganized? Would reorganization make the paper more effective? You must offer at least two concrete suggestions • Did you find this paper interesting and engaging? How could the author improve it (offer at least two concrete suggestions)? • Do you consider this paper to be persuasive (meaning that it makes a clear argument)? If not, what recommendations do you have for making it persuasive? • Feel free to make any additional comments here.
Seminar Questions • In this seminar we will discuss the value of peer review. Does looking for the project criteria in another student’s work provide clarity on how the criteria apply to your own project? • Based on the comments that you will make or have received in the peer review, what is the significance of having another set of eyes review your writing?
Tips for Peer Review • Open, honest critique--but sensitive • Praise and areas to improve • Offering ideas (avoid "Nothing needs to be fixed") • Be on time! • Consider organization, flow, argument (sound/convincing) • Watch for areas of paper losing focus
More Tips for Peer Review • Consider different writing styles • Check spelling, grammar, subject/verb agreement, formality, abbreviations/slang, etc. • Note areas of confusion • Pay attention to the thesis statement, intros & conclusion • Note the References page • Be specific with feedback
