Using a Learning Platform (Wizkids) to enhance teaching & learning in Geography - Key Stage 1 by Nicki Jackson; 0393358
‘[ICT] can empower children with a wide range of learning needs through its adaptability and interactivity’ (Sharp, Potter, Allen and Loveless, 2004: p.7). How ICT enhances the curriculum
Adaptability and Interactivity • Education City • 2simple Software • Wizkids Learning Platform
ICT in Key Stage 1 • During Key Stage 1 children should be given opportunities to develop their skills under the following headings:- • finding things out; • developing ideas and making things happen; • exchanging and sharing information; • reviewing, modifying and evaluating work as it progresses. • They should also be given opportunities to apply and develop their ICT • capability through the use of ICT tools to support their learning in all • Subjects. • (The National Curriculum for England, 1999)
Learning Platforms Learning Platforms are secure online sites that can be accessed in school or at home, using secure individual log ons, allowing teachers to track each individual's learning. Children are able to work at a level of ability that meets their needs whilst exploring the activities set by the teacher. (Becta, 2009)

Assessment & Attainment The National Curriculum (1999) states that ‘during key stage 1 pupils explore ICT and learn to use it confidently and with purpose to achieve specific outcomes. They start to use ICT to develop their ideas and record their creative work. They become familiar with hardware and software’. The majority of pupils are expected to be working within the levels 1 – 3 The expected attainment level at the end of key stage 1 is level 2
Progression of Skills • As a school we have an ICT Skills Progression Table. • Makes ICT progression easier to track. • Provides next steps to children’s learning. • Enables teachers to make children’s learning more personal.
Advantages • Individual log ons – help track progress • Safe & secure • Personalised learning • Home/School Links • Disadvantages • Some families may not have access • Practitioners need to be aware of it’s uploading capabilities
