How Cyberstalking Works • Stalkers target victims through: • Chat rooms, message boards, e-mail • Different forms of cyberstalking: • Threatening e-mails, spam, online verbal abuse, inappropriate messages on message boards, computer viruses, tracing internet activity, and identity theft • Off-line stalking can result from cyberstalking • Abusive/excessive phone calls, vandalism, trespassing
History of Legislation • 1999 • Cyberstalking legislation talks become popular • January 2006 • President George W. Bush signed federal anti-cyberstalking legislation • Talks of improving legislation still happen today
Criticisms to 2006 Legislation • Vague nature of words • “annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person over the Internet” • Unclear meaning of words • “refers to annoying "conduct" or simply an e-mail whose message irritates its recipient”
Effects of Cyberstalking • Changes in sleeping and eating patterns • Nightmares • Hypervigilance • Anxiety • Helplessness • Fear for safety • Shock and disbelief
