HL7 Standards • See HL7 Web site for standards: • http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/index.cfm?ref=nav • Version 2 and version 3 messaging standards are most recognized, but different versions and others, eg, • Clinical Document Architecture • HL7 HER System Functional Model • HL7 standards in ANSI and ISO • HL7 ANSI Standards: http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/ansiapproved.cfm • HL7 ISO Standards: http://www.iso.org/iso/search.htm?qt=HL7&sort=rel&type=simple&published=on • HL7 standards in use by HITSP (Healthcare Information Technology Standards) • http://www.hl7.org/documentcenter/public_temp_ADCA1FC9-1C23-BA17-0CA06FF55A5F95A4/faq/HL7_Standard-HITSP_IS_V1090808.pdf • HL7 standards named in HHS (Health and Human Services) Final Rule: • http://www.hl7.org/implement/standards/hhsifr.cfm
HL7 Standards Processes • Standards and Ballots: • 4 Types of Standards in HL7 • Comment • Informative • Draft Standard for Trial Use (DTSU, “proof of concept”) • Normative (meant for ANSI) • Ballots are tallied as “affirmative” or “negative” with comments • A certain percentage have to be approved, and comments addressed. • Voting on proposed standards occurs just before an HL7 Work Group Meeting (3 times per year) • Therefore, work groups usually target balloting and Work Group Meetings as deadlines for their work • See: http://gforge.hl7.org/gf/download/docmanfileversion/5301/6488/HL7Voting.ppt
HL7 Work Groups • Work Groups established to actually do the work (develop standards) • 57 active groups on HL7 Web Site (reductionist approach) • http://www.hl7.org/Special/committees/index.cfm?ref=nav • But work form one group always influences work on another group • Work group processes: • Teleconferences for 4 months • HL7 Work group meeting • Address comments on ballots (standards) • Work out issues Face to Face • Sit in with other work groups to discuss overlapping issues • Decide work for next 4 months (and standards and Ballots)
