HL7 Standards Processes • Standards and Ballots: • 4 Types of Standards in HL7 • Comment • Informative • Draft Standard for Trial Use (DTSU, “proof of concept”) • Normative (meant for ANSI) • Ballots are tallied as “affirmative” or “negative” with comments • A certain percentage have to be approved, and comments addressed. • Voting on proposed standards occurs just before an HL7 Work Group Meeting (3 times per year) • Therefore, work groups usually target balloting and Work Group Meetings as deadlines for their work • See: http://gforge.hl7.org/gf/download/docmanfileversion/5301/6488/HL7Voting.ppt

HL7 Work Groups • Work Groups established to actually do the work (develop standards) • 57 active groups on HL7 Web Site (reductionist approach) • http://www.hl7.org/Special/committees/index.cfm?ref=nav • But work form one group always influences work on another group • Work group processes: • Teleconferences for 4 months • HL7 Work group meeting • Address comments on ballots (standards) • Work out issues Face to Face • Sit in with other work groups to discuss overlapping issues • Decide work for next 4 months (and standards and Ballots)
