Differentiated Instruction • Is a model of instruction that revolves around the belief that students learn in many different ways • It means: “Tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction.” - Carol Ann Tomlinson

Examine your role as teacher in the differentiated classroom ★ Have a Repertoire of Teaching Strategies ✔ Direct Instruction ✔ Inquiry-based Learning ✔ Cooperative Learning ✔ Information Processing Strategies 3. Identify areas of your curriculum that could be adapted to differentiated instruction 4. Identify a Variety of Instructional Activities. Target learning styles in your approaches. 5. Identify Ways to Assess or Evaluate Student Progress

Differentiated Instruction: Why Technology? • Reaches a variety of senses. This allows the individual to tailor or focus their learning to their individual style, whether it is verbal, auditory or physical. • Students are motivated to use technology • Flexibility of the medium • Prepares students for the future • Validates self expression by allowing students to decide how they want to create a project or assimilate information. Technology gives a sense of ownership to the user. • Creates an active rather than passive atmosphere for learning, which forces student participation and makes them think. Technology fosters communication among students as well as between student and teacher. They discuss the content, organization of content, and how to present it to others (topics which may not have otherwise been discussed). • Makes sense because it is already built in to the everyday life of all students Teaching should & must remain about the needs of our 21st Century children!
Suggestions for a Differentiated Instructional Technology Approach • Identify student learning styles to customize learning experiences by better meeting student needs. • Offer students a choice when establishing projects and desired outcomes. • Technology integration should be seamless and meaningful, it's not something "Extra". • Start simple and build upon to establish an instructional repertoire. • Use technology resources that are accessible 24/7. • Ask your digitally connected students for assistance, they will enjoy it!! • Be practical and realistic with yourself and your students. • Have fun!
Get to Know Your Students Multiple Intelligences In his 1983 book called Frames of Mind, Howard Gardner of Harvard University identified seven intelligences we all possess. Because our understanding of the brain and human behavior is constantly changing, the number of intelligences is expanding. Two to three new intelligences had been added recently. Gardner claims that we all have all the intelligences, but that no two people are exactly alike.

Multiple Intelligences & Lesson Planning Using Technology If not careful one might come to the conclusion that a lesson or activity needs to be planned for each intelligence.Students do not possess merely one intelligence but several of the intelligences. Some are typically found together such as the linguistic and logical learners (Gardener et al., 2006). One well planned activity or lesson can easily touch on several intelligences without much extra effort. In other words, you need not do a lesson or activity for each intelligence since several intelligences can be served by using one lesson.
Whatever you are teaching, see how you might connect it with: Words (Linguistic) Numbers or logic (Logical-Mathematical) Pictures (Spatial) Music (Musical) Self-reflection (Intrapersonal) A physical experience (Bodily-Kinesthetic) A social experience (Interpersonal), and/or An experience in the natural world (Naturalist)
