  1. The Gilded Age U.S. History 9/6 and 9/7

Vocabulary • Patent-a governent grant that allows the inventor to make, use or sell an invention for a certain time-no one else can make, use or sell it for that time. • Inventor-a person who created things for the first time. Example of inventor-Thomas Alva Edison. • Pollution-damage to land, air and water from harmful (poisonous) materials. Examples are oil (water/soil) and smoke (air).

  3. Industries Oil Industry-people started to drill underground for oil. Oil was like gold (money). Some uses for oil back then were: helping machines run better, lighting lamps and heating homes. Steel Industry-Inventors found out how to make iron into steel, which did not rust and would bend better.

  4. Industry.. • The owners of the industries became rich. • They did not pay their workers well, and they forced them to do dangerous things.

  6. Vocabulary work • 1. Write down (in English) what each of these words mean on your word list. • 2. Discuss signs. • 3. Make a video of yourself signing these words in an ASL sentence. • English Example: TELEGRAPH • Thomas Edison invented the TELEGRAPH so people could communicate with each other from far away.
