Deploying Revit Server 2013 Bruce McCallum
Background October 2010 • Started testing Revit Server January 2011 • Deployed for one project team June-July 2011 • Expanded to three networks and three studios • Deployed Revit Server 2012 January 2012 • Added STAGING domain for testing • Added fourth studio June 2012 • Deployed Revit Server 2013
Overview New Features Install Configure RSN.ini Files Test Connection Add Projects Administration Backups Connecting External Domains Summary Additional Resources
New Features New server infrastructure • Multiple Hostservers • Connect to the Host through Accelerator • Host connection maintained when Accelerator offline • Accelerator connection automatically restored Move models among Hostservers • Users not required to create new locals Reduce impact of model-level locks and orphaned model-level locks Side-by-side installation with previous version
Roles Host • Stores central models Accelerator • Aggregates multiple Hosts Admin • Revit Server Administrator Access
Install Roles Project & Cache folders Data Storage
RSN.ini List of Hosts • Name or IP address Client: • File browsing • Resolve link file location Accelerator • List of hosts • Resolve central file location Admin • Hosts in RSAdmin
Test Connection Do not switch Accelerator when: • multiple Revit sessions are open • server-based central model is open • Acceleratoris not available.
Copy Existing Projects Copy 2012 folder to the 2013 folder Open in Revit 2013 and upgrade Existing 2012 files remain untouched Upgrade links first if possible
Save-As Existing Projects Previous version of Revit: • Browse to previous version • Detach from Central • Open • Savein temporary location Revit 2013: • Browse to detached file • Open and Save to Revit Server
Administration New address for RSAdmin in 2013: • http://ServerName/RevitserverAdmin2013 Use RSAdmin 2012 concurrently
Security New address for RSAdmin in 2013: • http://ServerName/RevitserverAdmin2013 Use RSAdmin 2012 concurrently
Changing Server Roles Comma-delimited list in environment variable • RSROLE2013 Order does not matter but you must use English Re-host models if moving the Host function from one server to another. No restart required
Copy or Move Models between Hosts Must use Revit Server Administrator Opening detached and Save-As will result in a new GUID Update linked models by replacing with a new version? • This will produce a model with a new GUID • Cannot resolve the link • Best to use Reload From
Re-hosting Models Host failure? Time to re-host models on another server Adding the Host role to an existing Accelerator or Admin server Update RSN.ini file on Hosts, Accelerators, Admin and Workstations Re-hosting models will require the latest version of the file to be saved to the new host
Shut Down Host Revit Server Administrator • Lock the Host Server Manager • IIS Manager • Shutdown RevitServerAppPool2013 Windows Task Manager • End any w3wp.exeprocesses Restart server IIS Manager • Restart the RevitServerAppPool2013 Revit Server Administrator • Unlock the Host
Backup - Scripts to Cut Locals Scheduled Task • Run at specific times. Change from previous version: • Host must be specified Below is an example of a script that will cut local files from all central files in the Project folder: • Provide Sample Script
Backups - Lock and Copy RSAdmin • Lock the server, folder or model • Allow time for existing process to complete Windows Explorer • Copy the folder or project to a new location RSAdmin • Unlock the server, folder or model
Connecting External Domains Not supported by Autodesk Connect Revit Servernetworks Enable access and collaboration between firms • Hostor Accelerator in DMZ • Name resolution from workstation to server • Firewall allows TCP on port 808 through to server • Site-to-site VPN • RSN.ini
Security Security and model-access permissions not possible in Revit Server Solved through Hostconfiguration • Additional Host for each collaborative situation One project per Host to your network • Modify RSN.ini file
Summary Install side-by-side with previous versions Support for multiple hosts • Better distribution of projects • Reduces single point of failure concerns Better site survivability Quicker access to files Solid backbone for sharing projects at multiple sites Secure connection between locations Distributes the network load
