Who is Keith Haring • Pop Artist whose fame was biggest in the 1980’s • He was a graffiti Artist that made this style of art acceptable and popular during the phase of break dancing and made graffiti big in the streets of NYC. • He developed a unique style of art using simple, geometric shapes and lines. • He attended art school in Manhattan but his art was recognized all over the world
How he became famous • He was an art student struggling who decided to pick up a piece of chalk and made these “artistic symbols” in Manhattan subways. • There was a blank black wall and he drew white chalk on it. • People started to notice and he actually drew a crowd who would watch him
How he became famous? • He got arrested for drawing in the subways for defacing property and the rest was history— • He was in the papers and people started to ask “Who is Keith Haring?
This still resides in NYC and told a message when drugs hit their peak in the 80’s
He even had the opportunity to paint the Berlin wall before it was torn down!
Your Objective: • To create a series of woodcut prints using the artist Keith Haring for inspiration.
Time Line • Watch a video featuring Keith Haring called “Drawing the Line” • Sketch out ideas and concepts for woodblocks –you can use the internet, books or ideas from your imagination. • Develop ideas in sketchbook until a final drawing is surmised. • Transfer idea or trace onto the 8x10 block and go over it with a permanent marker.
TIME LINE CONTINUTED: • Decide what areas you want to carve and what is going to be left-using the subtractive method. • Hint: (A better print will come if there is an equal ratio of carving and what is left—It creates balance) • You will use tools that are new to you, such as gouges, chisels and wood carving tools. • Last, you will print and woodblock and turn in the best three prints.
There are many types of woodcarving tools-use what works for you!!
Grading 25% ---Concept—idea of image-is it creative, imaginative and original—This is your sketch and pre-planning of your woodblock. 25%---Work in class—using time effectively working every period and cleaning up in time. 50%---Final 3 prints that you hand in, neatness, originality, different prints, unique prints, did you follow the guidelines, did you use Keith Haring’s style of art?
