Organization Mission MISSION “To enhance and facilitate the use of the private sector’s core competences and product marketing through leveraging the skills and networks of companies to control and manage HIV/AIDS in the workplace and beyond”
SWOT • Strength • 55 members • The government support-TACAIDS • Funding from GTZ, US Government • Additional support from UNDP & UNAIDS • Support from other NGO like PharmAccess, MSD • Good working relationship with member companies.
Weakness • New organization it has not acquired much equity • Reluctance in paying subscription • Few staff involved –Managing ABCT • Logistical problem- (only 1 base in Dar, no vehicle) • Funding • Lack of sufficient products to members
Opportunities • Availability of potential members • The link with Global and Pan Africa Coalition to induce Tanzania firms • The PPP concept growing and ABCT can be the link • PEPFAR funding on HIV AIDS • The Global Fund • World Bank fund, government funding, GTZ, UN organs and others.
Threat • Ethical problems in communicating sex issues • Political and policies influence • Cultural and norms barriers • Presence of other diseases • Globalization and technology development.
Programs has been done so far • Peer education training • Refresher course for peer educators • Management of Workplace program • Senior management training • Regional sensitization (Tanzania has about 26 region)
How we go about • Donor meeting where all donors in the area of HIV/AIDS come together on a meeting to discuss how to support ABCT • Members contribute funds and participate in the Board meeting and Annual General Meeting • Proposal are written requesting specific support from interested supporters
The challenges • Funds not being available on time always working on tense time • Interest of the donors which sometimes are not in line with ABCT objective • Members who have invested heavily on HIV programs reluctant to become members eg Mining companies. • Perceived cost some companies
cont…. • The Challenges remain on the HIV/AIDS work place policy which is not a mandatory to employers hence most of them ignores • Reluctance in some areas accepting the concept of private public partnership
Way forward • Work closely with the government, donors and other interested parties • Develop a strong funding mechanism with possible launching the private sector fund • Leveraging others NGOs dealing in the similar capacities • Incorporating other diseases like Malaria into ABCT programs
Opportunities working together • Exchange of experiences by visiting and gaining knowledge • Funding sharing and other possible opportunities • Working together as the joint effort in enhancing the PAN AFRICAN Business Coalition • Participating in Global Business Coalition leveraging strong experiences • Also use GBC to influence non members to join, for example Barrick mining is the GBC member but not ABCT member though they operate in Tanzania
