NON – COMMUNICABLE DISEASES Presentation by DR. VIOLET (de Sa) PINTO Lecturer, Department of PSM
Objectives: At the end of the session the student shall have knowledge of : • Definition of Non communicable diseases (NCD’s) • Types of NCD’s • Approach towards NCD’s ,namely Concept of “risk factors and risk groups” Gaps in natural history Modes of prevention
Definition • Impairments or deviations from normal which have one or more of the following characters: • Permanent • Leave residual disability • Non-reversible pathological alteration • May require special training of the patient for rehabilitation • May be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation and care. Practically • Any disease duration for at least 3 months
C. Vascular Renal Nervous /mental disorders Musculoskeletal disorders- arthritis and allied disorders Chronic nonspecific respiratory diseases Permanent results of accidents Obesity Degenerative Diseases- diseases of unknown cause and progressive course Senility Blindness Cancer Diabetes
APPROACH Modes of prevention Risk factors & Risk groups Gaps in Natural history
RISK FACTORS • A determinant that can be modified by intervention , thereby reducing the possibility of occurrence of disease or other specified outcome. • Suggestive- absolute proof of causation lacking Observable or identifiable prior to event Combination – additive or synergistic Some modifiable/ some not Some may be truly causative Collective community risk factor- environmental Important role in screening
RISK GROUPS • Target groups (at risk mothers’/ infants) • screening for something in all- but more for those in need- in proportion to the need.
Gaps in Natural History Absence of known agent Multifactoral causation Indefinite onset Long Latent period (distribution between diseased & non-diseased)
Prevention • Earlier only tertiary prevention, now stress on primordial • Integrated approach to modes of prevention
