  2. Rural Innovation and Business Systems Conference Nairn 27th February 2013 Rural Innovation Ewan Ramsay International Resources and Recycling Institute

  3. What is IRRI? • International Resources and Recycling Institute (IRRI) is an environmental charity dedicated to seeking practical and innovative solutions to improve global resource use. • IRRI achieves this through International Partnership Projects, Direct Services and a charitable campaign, ‘The Resource for Life Programme’.

  4. Partnership Projects • IRRI works on international grant-funded projects to explore new solutions to problems concerning energy, water, waste and other resources • Recent Projects

  5. Innovation • What do we mean by Innovation? • What is the purpose of Innovation? • Why are IRRI interested in Innovation?

  6. Hydro Nation • The new legislation aims to cement Scotland's global reputation as home to a dynamic, world class water industry with knowledge and expertise in water management. • Global Ambitions • Delivering World Leading Innovation and Investment • How can Scotland accelerate the development and commercialisation of new water technologies and services? • This sets a challenge for commercial delivery from Scotland

  7. What does this commercial challenge mean? • If you don’t sell your product or service to a target customer, one of your competitors will. • It does not matter if you have a measurably better product or service than your competitor. • You have to be better at selling to your target customer than your competitors. • You have to be better at convincing your target customer that your product or service is better than your competitors’

  8. What does this mean for the Water Sector? • There are high levels of interest in new technologies • Driven by the unrelated challenges of scarcity in one part of the world and • Energy opportunities (renewable) and challenges (high user) in another • Both support a strong political agenda • Historically highly specialised and driven by engineering requirements • Currently changing to a wider market which is less interested in the science, more interested in the outcomes

  9. How can the Water Sector respond? • The levels of competition are increasing • Levels of investment are increasing • New requirements in the market are creating new opportunities • New opportunities are bringing new technologies • In turn, new kinds of investor are becoming interested • This brings a new dynamism • Hydro Nation is both stimulating and is able to harness this dynamism

  10. WARES • Water Assets Renewable Energy Solutions • A project to link the opportunities of running water, a range of land assets, and a climate well suited to generating renewable energy • WARES aims to achieve Renewable Energy Enterprise • By means of PPP’s using the unexploited assets of water companies to support resilient communities

  11. WARES The Problem – • Energy costs for the provision of water • An unconsidered “hidden cost” • An acute problem in the Northern Periphery • Problems of a dispersed, sparse population • The single largest energy user • Pumping and Treatment costs • Traditional energy user

  12. WARES - Benefits • An innovative service in the NPP region • 9 pilot sites in separate regions demonstrating the value of the service • Job creation • Enterprise creation • Energy independence • Reduction in emissions • Scalable Innovation

  13. Funding • A New Green Angel Syndicate • A new concept for Scotland • Investment Capability • Business building knowledge • Water sector knowledge • A winning combination • An opportunity to be ambitious and Innovative

  14. Funding • Access to upwards of £25 million funding • Investment in all stages of business / community development • Wide range of expertise • Practical hands on assistance • Virtual incubation
