  1. Preteaching Vocab. • Dialogue - a conversation involving two or more people or characters Turn to pg. 51 and write down the definition of Satire. • Satire – What can we expect to read about in this short story?

  2. Dialogue - a conversation involving two or more people or characters • Satire – humorous writing or speech intended to point out errors, falsehoods, foibles, or failings. We can expect to laugh different aspects of middle-class ways of life, characters, setting, and dialogue. • Existentialism – philosophy that focuses on absurdity (silliness) and meaninglessness in life.

  6. French customs Green – No cars DOWNTOWN Rainy/Cold – Winters in N.E. part of France (said to affect their behavior) South France – much warmer and sunnier Unemployment rate is high Those who DO have a job receive 5 weeks vacation/year AND only work 39 hrs/week

France: The Country of Welcome • Social classes are not obvious. • Due to social laws, everyone has health benefits, education, and unemployment PAY. • Languages: French, German dialect, Basque – near the border of Spain • Families eat together every day! • Lunch on Sundays is where it’s at!! Friends & Family gather. *Bread at every meal!

  9. Lastly… • Children go to school from 8am – 430-5pm. • School is FREE, even at the university level. • Students commute to college.
