What is the Raven? The raven is the moist important character in the legends of the Northwest Coast Indians. It is a big bird that makes a loud “gaw” sound.
Sometimes A Hero, Sometimes Trouble In Chilkat legends, the raven is an intelligent bird with great powers. Sometimes he is a hero and sometimes he is mean and causes trouble. The Chilkat called him a trickster because he liked to play tricks on people.
Giving Light To The World Light came to the world from the raven, who stole it from the rich man. The raven became a baby who begged his grandfather for the box of light. That rich man loved his grandson very much so he gave his grandson the box. After getting the box, the raven flew out with the light and made a loud GAW sound.
Creating Lakes And Rivers The Raven created lakes and rivers. The raven traveled to a place where the man kept all the water in a spring. The raven drunk all the water. The man tried to stop him, the man sent the spirits of the smoke to stop the bird. He later spit out all the water from the spring. That is how lakes and rivers were created.
Conclusion There are many myths and stories about the Raven. Studying about the Raven helps us understand and know more about our culture.
