  1. Wuthering Heights by Emily BronteChapter 12

  2. Summary… • Isabella mopes, Edgar reads and Catherine starves herself • Catherine truly believes she is dying (“Oh I will die, she exclaimed!” page 120) and Nelly doesn’t think much of it at the beginning therefore Edgar is completely ignorant to Catherine’s condition hence “he is continually among his books” • Catherine becomes truly maddened by Edgar’s ‘lack of attendance’ to her even threatening to kill herself. “If I were only sure it would kill him, she interrupted, I’d kill myself directly!” • Nelly becomes alarmed by Catherine’s mad behaviour and hallucinations “I see a face in it!” • Catherine is delirious and feverish and when Edgar enters the room, he is shocked to see her in such state “he could only glance from her to me in horrified astonishment”

  3. Summary… • Edgar blames Nelly for Catherine’s deterioration and Nelly leaves the chamber to find Isabella’s favourite dog hanging from a tree almost dead • Nelly summons Mr Kenneth (the doctor) to seat to Catherine where he informs Nelly that Heathcliff and Isabella have been on secret nightly outings and that they intend to “elope” • Nelly goes to find Isabella, however; she had already left with Heathcliff. Nelly holds off warning Edgar as she “dare not rouse the family, and fill the place with confusion” • The next day a maid, which had returned from a trip to Gimmerton, came “panting” into the room where she told the whole story. Edgar disowns Isabella “she is only my sister in name”.

  4. Group Task We are now going to split into groups to find literary and linguistic techniques, development of themes and developments of relationships between characters… I love group work!! That’s a fantastic idea!

  5. The sheet you have is on the wiki, please add your ideas from today’s lesson!
