  1. ACOUSTIC MONITORING GROUP Whitlow Au, Marc Lammers & John Siebert Marine Ecosystem Stewardship. Expansion of existing fish tracking arrays and deployment of automated acoustic marine mammal detection systems sonar plankton monitors and will provide data needed for forecasting the effects of short-term environmental fluctuation and long-term climate changes on living marine resources.

  2. Proposed Budget

  3. Proposed monitoring sites

  4. Ecological Acoustic Recorder

  5. Kilo Nalu site • EAR electronics will be modified and connected to a node at 40 m. • Digitized data will be monitored on land in real time using marine mammal detection algorithms. • Other sounds of interest (snapping shrimp, fish) will also be monitored.

  6. Spinner dolphins at Makua Beach

  7. Makapu’u site • Deep water EAR will be deployed in 100 - 250 m depth • EAR unit will be recovered and replaced every 2 months. • Marine mammal occurrence will be monitored. • Vessel entry/intrusion in BFRA will be quantified.

  8. Vessel monitoring in NPAS (Tutuila)

  9. Data products • A time series of when marine mammals occur in the vicinity of the two sites (one real time, another updated bi-monthly). • A time series of which marine mammal species occur in the vicinity of the site • A time series of 24-hour vessel traffic in the Makapu’u BRFA. • A time series of other biological signal, such as snapping shrimp, reef fish and bottomfish.
