Background • Independent Research commissioned by the Devon Consortium Sept 2010 • Survey was managed by the Community Council of Devon, under the Total Support project funded by the Big Lottery (2009-2012) • Purpose to map the current position of the voluntary and community sector in Devon and identify the support needs of those organisations • Circulated across Devon - 503 returns from an estimated 3,751 VCS Organisations Devon Consortium
Devon VCS Organisation’s ..... • Well-established with 1/3rd delivering to more than 500 beneficiaries • Most registered charities – 60% • Neighbourhood & Community Groups – 29% • Low percentage of CICs and Social Enterprise • 95% stated they were either successful or fairly successful • Few hold formal quality assurance standards • Few new entrants and ‘change’ Devon Consortium

Size & Economic IMPACT • 60% had at least 1 paid member of staff 98% had a least 1 volunteer • 40% have 21 or more volunteers • 1/3rd had 500 + beneficiaries using their services • 23% had between 201 – 500 beneficiaries • Median income was £11,050 • 30% had annual income of less that £5,000 Devon Consortium
Size & Economic IMPACT A conservative estimate: • 28,000 full time equivalent jobs that is 7% of the workforce in Devon • 63,400 volunteers • Total Income in the sector of £745,000,000 Devon Consortium
What ‘support’ needs... • ACCESSING FUNDING – information, bid writing and funding searches Nearly half 47% wanted to increase their income • VOLUNTEERS- Attracting and retaining the right volunteers ....with the right skills ... • Recruitment of TRUSTEES Devon Consortium
What ‘support’ needs • Management and leadership skills ....for paid staff in small organisations • Demonstrating impact and effectiveness • Increasing productivity (achieving more with less) • ICT training for staff and volunteers Devon Consortium
What Consortium Member can offer ....Stronger Communities Programme Development Work: In addition to the range of support there are five specialist support programmes focussing on: commissioning; community led planning; volunteering support; representation; service user engagement; and community hubs. Networking; Resources; Information: Support forums and networks for the VCS. There are a number of publications, newsletters and online resources, and direct group support, funding advice, and volunteering support. Training and Events: Workshops and training on good governance, financial skills, fundraising skills, tendering for contracts, collaborating with others and supporting volunteering good practice.
