North: California enters free, balance in favor of North / No more slave trade in Washington D.C. / Possibility of no slavery in N. Mex and Ut. (popular sovereignty) South: Stricter Fugitive slave law (easier to get their slaves back) / Could get slavery in N. Mex and Ut. / Part of CA is below 36/30 [no slaves] / **at this point Union saved but South angry!!!! Compromise of 1850
Fugitive Slave Law 1850 • Federal enforcement of the return of runaway slaves • North HAD to COMPLY w/ federal law • Anyone caught aiding runaways - fined $1,000 and jailed 6 months • Free or enslaved African-Americans could not testify in their own defense to prove that they were not fugitive slaves

South: thought slaveholders from Missouri would move into Kansas and it would become a slave state; The South liked this Act; slavery possible now north of 36/30 Kansas - Nebraska Act
1854 Republican Party Formed • Disagreement over Ks-Nb Act split the Whig Party • Pro-slave Whigs joined the Democratic Party • Whigs and Democrats that were opposed to the Ks-Nb Act and were anti-slave joined the Republican Party

1860 Presidential Election • South believed Lincoln was an abolitionist • He spoke of stopping spread of slavery West BUT not bringing an end to slavery • South believed if Lincoln elected, they would lose their voice in the government • Lincoln Wins Election of 1860!!!!!!
