  5. Before we get started:Look Through your Materials and Reflect • Take a few minutes by yourself to look at your materials (books, papers, digital notes, tools, etc.) from the previous days of learning together. • Using your salmon (pinkish orange) reflection sheet and write down: • Connections • What you understand now • What you want to explore • What questions you still have

  6. Make your Appointments • Find a partner from another team for each of your four (4) appointments . Write down the name of the person for each time. • 12:00___________ • 3:00____________ • 6:00____________ • 9:00____________

  8. Understanding and Supporting Instruction for ALL Purpose: To share an opportunity for principals, along with their teams, to deepen their understanding of effective instruction for diverse learners.

  9. What’s in your toolbox? Discuss with your 3:00 date: • What do you already know that helps you to understand AND support instruction that’s effective for ALL students? • How does it help?

  10. What’s in your toolbox? (cont.) Discuss with your 3:00 date: • What do you still need to learn to help you understand AND support instruction that’s effective for ALL students? • Why do you need that knowledge?

  11. Please thank your partners and saunter (walk quickly) back to your seat.

  12. Goal Setting • Thinkback to what you wanted to learn and be able to do as a result of the 5 days spent here. • Write down your own goal for today, based on your reflections. • Share your goal with an elbow partner. • If it’s outside of our learning targets, write it on a sticky and put it in the parking lot.

  17. Time for a 5 minute break

  18. Candy Re-Grouping • Find the table with the candy wrapper that matches what you chose this morning.

  19. Bridging to Fundamentals • 3 main ideas- pg. 5 • Use your Expert Text to explore your section. • Use your Mind Map for taking notes.

  20. Back to your Team Take turns, each participant will: • Teach the team about their section, using their Mind Map to guide them. • Teammates take notes on your mind maps. • Teammates pose questions using discussion cards.

  21. Process Grid • Read “In Practice”, pp. 7-10 and annotate. • Put a star next to the bullet in each section that is the most important for you. • As a team, complete the digital copy of your process grid (one person can be the recorder). Be sure to include all of the starred items from your team members

  26. Asking the Right Questions • How can we ask questions with high cognitive demand and low language loads? • Comprehensible input and output • Read the handout with your partner • As you walk around the room, try to come up with a level 3 question that would be comprehensible to a level 1 or 2 English learner.

  27. Learning Targets (Content Objectives) for Today: • Deepen understanding of instruction that’s effective for all learners through SIOP, UDL and Criteria 4, 5 and 6. • Increase awareness of strategies, resources, and practices to help classroom teachers improve their effectiveness with diverse learners (focusing on Core Instructional Practices 1, 2, 4 and 8). • Increase effectiveness with providing formative feedback that will improve core instruction for all students- identifying next steps/verge of feedback. 29. Applying our Knowledge • Decide which group mates will attend to which aspects of the note-taking tool: SIOP UDL Fundamentals of Learning • Principals may want to practice scripting to capture all that is happening for group. • Watch the video clip from JB Blair and take notes

  30. Insert Video Clip • JB Blair

  31. Discussion Cards • Take out your yellow “Share your Thinking” card, the red “Cite Evidence” card and purple “Build on an Idea Card” • Discuss what you noticed in the video that directly relates to SIOP, UDL and the Fundamentals of Learning.

  32. Random Response

  33. Writing Practice with Support • Explain how the fundamentals of learning were exhibited in the instruction we just saw. • Describe how the instruction we just saw is inconsistent with the fundamentals of learning. • Use the “Ways we express our thinking” guide to help you write a paragraph for each prompt (the orange section may be the most helpful)

  34. Formative FeedbackLearning-Focused Conversations • Based on the data collected, what can you identify as: • A strength (can)? • Something that you can help him integrate into his practice (verge of)? • Something that he will need continued support to be able to do in the longer term (far from)?

  35. Short-Term Feedback Guidelines • Related to the teacher’s area of focus • Can be incorporated into a teacher’s practice relatively easily • Within the teacher’s zone of proximal development • Specific support for improving the teacher’s practice

  36. Invitational Noticings and Wonderings • Write down a couple suggestions you have for Mr. Blair as a follow-up from your observation based on his ZPD. • Take turns with your partner (role play JB and principal or colleague) using invitational inquiry and suggestions for something to try tomorrow.

  37. Card Sort • SIOP + UDL + Fundamentals of Learning

  38. Reflections • What is your team taking away from this activity? Trends, noticings, surprises… • What implications does this learning have on our understanding of, and support for, instruction for all?

  45. Strategies we’ve loved and lost… • In your team, write down as many strategies from previous workshops as you can remember. • Figure out where each strategy belongs in the template. • When you have 7-10 let me know • Be ready to share a strategy that you haven’t heard yet (for a prize).

  46. Did you remember these? • Where do they belong in our template? • In what ways are they supporting or promoting the fundamentals of learning?
