Our Common Core For Today • RS.11-12.1: Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • WS. 11-12. 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
In the first sentence, provide the • title of the article • name of the author(s) • main idea, stated as a CLAIM. In “The EQ Factor,” published in Time Magazine in 1995, Nancy Gibbs and coauthors argue that it is emotional capacity, rather than IQ, that determines one’s level of success in life.
Quoting As you write your body and concluding paragraphs, you’ll want to quote from the author. Remember this: • A quotation records the exact language in a source. • Use quotations sparingly, too many quotes makes it appear that you haven’t read the article! • Failure to cite the source of your information is considered plagiarism
Quoting Standard form: In the body of your paper: 1. Give the quotation, 2. Put the quotation mark without a period, 3. Then put in parenthesis the author and the page number(Born 83). 4. Then a period.
Quoting Example. At the end of his Preface, Sanders states that “The more attentively I dwell in my place, the more I am convinced that behind the marvelous, bewildering variety of things there is one source” ( Sanders 6).
