  1. State-of-the-Industry Steel Supply, Kabul • Assessment 26MAR13 • Strength of grape trellis wire is important. US vineyard suppliers provide more than 8 wire size/strength options depending on grape production needs. • Vineyard wire failure is probable if inadequate wire is used for any given trellis design. • Current technical capacity of Afghan grape trellis technicians is elementary. After repeated requests for wire technical specifications and no response, TF Centurion visited reputedly the largest and best steel supplier in Kabul – Rahim Gardezi. • Take Aways • To-date Afghan grape trellis projects have only used 2.8mm diameter galvanized wire made in China. There has been no strength specification available for that wire. • Rahim Gardezi, very responsively ,submitted a sample of the wire to Kabul University materials testing laboratory and delivered strength test results within 4 days. • We have learned the 2.8mm wire currently available and used in trellis projectsis satisfactory and should not fail when the vines get heavy in 8 years. 25- MAR-13
