Why is Safety Important • Safety hazards exist in any laboratory. • Must be aware and take precautions to reduce risks of an accident. • You can avoid accidents if you understand how to use equipment and materials and follow procedures properly.
Specific Safety Hazards • Follow specific instructions to use materials and equipment safely.
Chemicals • Chemicals used in this course are dangerous. • Follow all rules to avoid accidents. • 9 points – pg. 601
Heat Sources • Use caution when using heat sources, and never leave them unattended. • Sources of heat: Bunsen burner, hot plates and light bulbs. • 9 points - pg. 601
Glass and Sharp Objects • All glass ware must be handled with care, breakage creates sharp edges and splinters. • 8 points – pg. 601 - 602
Electricity and Light • Electric and lights source can give electric shocks. • All devices should be properly grounded. • 9 points – pg. 602
Living things • Living Things need to be respected and not mistreated. • During dissection, only complete the requested procedures. • Body fluids must be cleaned up and may carry diseases. • 4 points – pg. 602
Accidents Can Happen • Be sure to notify your teacher if an accident should occur. • Cuts, chemical spills, burns or electrical accident are a few examples. • 5 points – pg. 602
