  3. Why a team of “rivals?” Bates, Chase, and Seward had run against Lincoln for the Republican nomination in 1860. Seward had been expected to win the nomination. Chase and Bates had seen themselves as the next in line. And, as we all know, none of them won. They were united by anti-slavery sentiment. Lincoln wanted to keep his friends close and his enemies closer

  8. Salmon Chase Secretary of the Treasury Like Bates, he had left Washington in 1864 Was a non-factor in April 14.

  9. April 14, 1865 • John Wilkes Booth would kill Lincoln. • Lewis Powell would kill William Seward. • Five people were injured at Seward’s home. • No one died. • George Atzerodt would kill Andrew Johnson. • Only one succeeded.
