Spiritual Disciplines Or The Anti-Sloth Hour
The Charismatic Tradition – Some Disciplines to Practice • Study the Scripture passages about the Holy Spirit – including the fruit and the gifts. • Enter deeply into every aspect of corporate worship meetings, empowered and enlivened by the Holy Spirit. • Spend time in prayer, asking the Father to fill you with the Holy Spirit.
The Contemplative Tradition – Some Disciplines to Practice • Read a devotional classic. (You don’t have to agree with everything in it to benefit from it). • Practice listening to God, spend time in silence this week. • Take a prayer walk. • Write an original prayer (in words, music, visual art, drama, dance, media).

Holiness –The Virtuous LifeDiscipline By God’s grace, I will strive mightily against sin [and will prevail] and will do deeds of love and mercy.
The Holiness Tradition – Some Disciplines to Practice • Try a 24 hour fast – from food, TV, speech. • Write out a confession in a journal. • Find an accountability partner to help you be victorious over temptation – meet regularly and be honest. • Do a “covet” check list and a “treasure” check list. Anything you prize too highly? Give it away.
Incarnational –The Sacramental LifeDiscipline By God’s grace, I will joyfully seek to show forth the presence of God in all that I am, in all that I do, in all that I say.
The Incarnational Tradition – Some Disciplines to Practice • Spend time with children and look for God in and with them. • Bring Christ’s presence to the ill through visitation. • Read The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. • Live a day paying particular attention to the Lord’s presence moment by moment, in every activity.
SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES: Life patterns that direct us to God and disciple us more fully into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
The Call to the Inner Life • Name some enemies of your soul. • How are you waging war against them? • What spiritual disciplines do you practice consistently? • Which ones are encouraged in your context and practiced by others – soldiers, officers and other leaders?
In the Bible, how does God communicate? How does God communicate to you?
Listening or Visualizing Prayer • “Open the eyes of my heart” – Eph 1:18 • “My sheep listen to my voice” – John 10:27
