meat produced from animals fed on antibiotics safe for humans Is ? KATARZYNA BCHITOU 19TH NOVEMBER 2012 ‘GOOD FOOD =GOOD MOOD’
Structure • Background to the project • Purpose & history of antibiotics in farming • Food born disease • Growth promoters • Antibiotic residue in meat • Solution to the problem • Conclusion / sources • Q and A
Background to the project • Microbiology • Problem of the future
Antibiotics in farming had been used for over 50 years • Infection treatment • Prophylactic use • Growth promoters
Food born disease caused by Salmonella or Campylobacter can get into humans via food chain
Growthpromoters = = ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT BACTERIA LIVESTOCK FEED+ANTIBIOTICS “SUPER BUG”
Antibiotic residue ANTIBIOTIC+FARM ANIMALS =ANTIBIOTIC RESIDUE IN MEAT negative effect on human flora allergy risk
Solution to the problem? • HOUSING IMPROVEMENT(DECREASE OVERCROWDING,BETTER HYGIENE) • ANTIBIOTIC CONTROL (DECREASE USAGE) • AVOID USE OF CROSS-RESISTANT PATHOGENS (NO HUMAN MEDICINES USED ON ANIMALS) • ALTERNATIVE GROWTH PROMOTION(IN-FEED ENZYMES,PROBIOTICS, ETC.)
Conclusion Antibiotics used as a growth promoters cause an antimicrobial resistance Overuse of antimicrobials designs “SUPER BUG” Solution must be found quickly to avoid global disaster!
