  1. Structure and Function and Adaptations

  2. Structure and Function • The structure of an animal is the body part • The function is the job of the body part • In order to survive, plants and animals have specialized adaptations that serve to protect them in their natural environment.

  3. For example… • Structure – gills on a fish • Function – breathing oxygen underwater

  4. Camouflage • Camouflage allows animals to blend in with the background

  5. Large ears • Large ears help animals hear better, but also help cool animals’ bodies in hot environments

  6. Spines or Thorns • Spines or thorns on plants offer protection from herbivores • Spines on an animal such as a starfish also keep the animal from being eaten.

  7. Specialized feet • Animals feet are adapted to their environment • Webbed feet are found in animals that spend time in the water • Hooves are found in land animals that need stability on rocky ground

  8. Eyespots • Large eyespots make animals appear larger to their predators so they are less likely to be eaten.

  9. Deep or wide root systems • Plants can better adapt to drier environments when their roots are specialized to take in water that is very deep or take in water quickly after a rain.

  10. Mimicry • In mimicry, an animal mimics another that might be poisonous or dangerous to discourage predators from eating it.

  11. Poison • Animals and plants with poisons use it for protection from predators. Some animals use poison to help them obtain food.
