Anti-Imperialism TRANSPORTATION
Loading of the Ship • Ship captains used the tight packing system which consisted of packing more slaves than the ship could carry. • While kept on the ships, the slaves ankles and wrists were chained leaving them little space to move.
Sanitation • Slaves went to the bathroom wherever they were because they couldn’t reach one of the few buckets without trampling the neighboring slaves.
Suicide • Transporting slaves resulted in slaves killing themselves in the following ways including: • Jumping overboard • Other slaves strangling them • Starving themselves
Food • They were fed horrible food twice a day. • They drank more water than a normal human would because it was hot and humid under the deck which made them have to use the bathroom a lot.
Diseases aboard Ships • The flux, smallpox, and scurvy were the most common diseases spread on the ships. • To keep the slaves from getting scurvy they were constantly whipped while in their shackles which left them with open flesh wounds.
Creation of road ways • When the Europeans arrived they created roads and railroads to help move goods from place to place. • When one region was in the middle of a civil war, roads and railroads made it easier for other parts of Africa to get involved.
Diffusion • When slaves were transported to other countries, most of their culture was lost. • Also, in Africa families and tribes were torn apart by members being sold to slavery.
